Inside Look with Devon Still
Starter’s upcoming campaign, Starting is…, features appearances by inspiring father-daughter duo Devon and Leah Still, showing that leading an active lifestyle is a priority for those of all ages, and should be both unintimidating and achievable for all; one just needs to “get started.”Starter sat down with Devon at a recent shoot for an exclusive interview:

STARTER

What made our campaign appealing to you?

DEVON

Being an athlete, it is important for me to stay active year around so I can stay in shape to perform well on the football field. Also with leah going through her battle with cancer it’s extremely important for her to be active to maintain a healthy lifestyle. With Stater launching a campaign encouraging people, especially kids, to get active I felt it was a perfect match.

STARTER

How do you show Leah how to stay active and how important it is to lead a healthy lifestyle?

DEVON

I take Leah with me to all my workouts so naturally she wants to workout because she wants to do what she sees me do.

STARTER

What are you and Leah looking forward to doing together now when the weather is nice?

DEVON

Just getting outside and running around. For the last 2 years Leah has really been cooped up in the hospital not being able to get out and do what every child should, being a kid.

STARTER

Why do you feel that kids are not as active today as they were in the past? How can we help change that and encourage them to stay healthy?

DEVON

When I was growing up there wasn’t as much technology. Nowadays kids prefer staying in the house watching tv, playing video games or on the computer and iPads. In order to change that we need more campaigns such as this one that reaches households and gets the parents to understand how important exercise is. Without the adults in the households understanding, kids will continue to sit in the house.

STARTER

What made our campaign appealing to you?

STARTER

What is your off-season training routine like?

DEVON

Our offseason is 3 months long. So after a long season I usually take 2 weeks off to rest my body and rehab any aches I may have. Then the remainder of the offseason I workout out 6 days per week, both running and lifting

STARTER

What are some of your game-day rituals?

STARTER

Some things I must do every game day is listen to music of course (artists varies on how I’m feeling that day) but I always go on YouTube and watch inspirational videos from Ray Lewis and Eric Thomas. My inspiration is knowing I have the youth from my home town looking up to me and I have to show them that it doesn’t matter the environment you grow up in or the obstacles you face in life, you can still be whatever it is you dream of.

STARTER

Who are some of your role models?

DEVON

My role models are my parents and my daughter.

STARTER

What’s your favorite sport outside of football?

DEVON

My favorite sport outside of football is basketball. Grew up playing it.

STARTER

Tell us a little about your family and the role they’ve played shaping who you are today.

DEVON

Both my parents are from Camden Nj. We didn’t have a lot growing up material wise, but we had the two things that were much more important, unconditional love and support in everything we did. The way I was raised helped me become the parent I am today and showed my if I showered my daughter with love and always let her know I was there for her we could accomplish anything. Like beating cancer.

STARTER

Some words to describe what “Starting Is” to you.

DEVON

“Starting is a team effort.” I like that because in the pictures we took it shows leah and I are a team. Also it conveys the message that the kids can’t get active on their own, it takes a team effort. Whether it comes from those in the household or the people at school.
